Brazilian Committee Votes To Ban All Abortions, Even In Cases Of Rape

Women protest on Avenida Paulista in Sao Paulo against the prohibition of abortion, on November 13, 2017. Wednesday, November 8, marked an unsettling moment in Brazil’s history after a congressional committee voted positively on a total abortion ban, including cases of rape and if the mother’s life is in danger. Led by Evangelical Christians, the decision passed 18 to 1, with "the single vote against the ban cast by the only woman present during the session, Erika Kokay of the Workers Party,".Currently, abortion in Brazil is illegal unless it involves victims of sexual assault, threatens the mother’s life or in cases of incest and anencephaly. Women who attempt illegal abortion face up to three years in prison. The new amendment would prohibit abortion under any circumstances. To go into effect, the new measure will have to summon at least two-thirds of votes in both chambers of Congress. (Photo by Cris Faga/NurPhoto via Getty Images)
